Questions journalists must ask
What happened? Where? When?
Who were the main actors?
Why did this happen?
What are the consequences?
Last Sunday, October 28th, the municipal elections took place in Chile. It was the first time Chileans voted under the newly-approved law that established the voluntary vote and automatic inscription. Contrary to expectations, a great majority of the population (59%) decided not to exercise their civic right. Many voting booths did not receive people for a long part of the day. In interviews, people explained that they weren’t interested in voting when they had other things to do. Others chose not to vote as a sign of protest.
Experts are still analyzing what happened last Sunday and the consequences for the government coalition, which suffered several electoral defeats at the hands of the opposition and independent parties. For example, Mayor Cristián Labbé, a retired Coronel and supporter of the Pinochet regime, lost to Josefa Errázuriz after 16 years at the head of the municipality.
